The history of Craps dates back to a dice game known as Hazard, which dates back to Bernard de Mandeville in New Orleans in Early 1800’s. Hazard is thought to be a byproduct of Azzahr, meaning ‘the die’ a game played by Arabs.

The game evolved as it traveled from the Arab territories to France and then to England. By the early eighteenth century, formal game rules for Hazard had been established. France started playing the English variation of Hazard and is believed to have been imported to the new world by early French colonists. In the mid-1700s, when the English beat the French in Canada, the French settlers moved to Louisiana. Dice were played on river boats, clubs and wharfs and a simplified ‘American’ variation of Craps was created. The game moved west and is a favored game that is played all over the U.S. and around the planet.

The name ‘Craps’ is presumed to be a French pronunciation of the phrase crabs, which refers to two ones. There are two basic forms of Craps that are enjoyed-street Craps and bank Craps. Street caps, correctly named because it is bet on the streets is where a hurler sets a point and then attempts to acquire that point. The wagering is made either with or opposed to the player and another player must cover the wager for the game to go ahead.

In bank Craps, which is the familiar game, played in casinos, the betting house funds the casino game. The participants bet with the house-the casino covers all of the wagers of all of the players. Craps used to be a very popular game but in the past 20 years had divided itself and different games, such as poker and black jack became more well-known. However, Craps is seeing a surge in popularity once again in web betting houses and in brink and mortar casinos.
