Be smart, play cunning, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A great many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
