Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
