Be clever, play smart, and become versed in craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
