Be smart, play clever, and master craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and located safety in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so players could wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
