Be brilliant, play clever, and become versed in craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Current craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he created the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
