Be brilliant, play brilliant, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Later, he established the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
