Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and located refuge in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
