Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed down south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
