Be brilliant, play clever, and master craps the proper way!

Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when exiled by the English, the French relocated down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps layout. He appended the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
